What is a proctored exam?
All UMUC Asia DE classes (except LIBS classes) require a proctored exam. A proctored exam is overseen by an impartial
individual (called a proctor) who monitors the student while he or she is taking the exam. The proctor ensures
the security and integrity of the exam process.
-
Do I have to register for my proctored exam?
You do not have to "register" for your Asia DE proctored exam. Contact your local UMUC Field
Rep office two weeks prior to the scheduled Proctored Exam Week to schedule your appointment to test during the
published exam period. Students taking Adelphi (stateside) classes must "register" for their proctored exams through
ISIS at http://www.umuc.edu/fdes/.
-
What if I must test early or late?
- You must get written permission from your instructor, in the form of an e-mail authorizing you to test early or late.
- You must present the permission e-mail to your proctor before being able to test.
-
What if I want to test at a different UMUC Field Site in Asia or Europe (i.e. TAD/TDY/PCS etc.)?
If you want to test at a UMUC Field Site that is different from the Education Center you selected when reserving your class
(either in Asia or Europe), complete and submit the Alternate Location/Proctor Application Form.
Complete the Student Contact and Class Information portions, then select your new location, and submit. Your exam will be
sent to your new UMUC Field Site. Next, follow the instructions in answer #2.
-
What if I cannot test at any UMUC Field Site in Asia or Europe (i.e. SDES Student/TAD/TDY/PCS/Leave etc.)?
- Find an appropriate proctor within two weeks of the published testing period. See question #6 for information on selecting an authorized alternate proctor.
- Complete and submit the Alternate Location/Proctor Application Form. See question #9 for instructions on filling out the form.
- Provide your exam schedule to your proctor.
- Comply with any payment schedule that may be required by your proctor or testing center.
- Schedule your exam date and time with the proctor.
- Take your exam within the timeframe outlined in your course syllabus or as authorized by your instructor.
-
What are the criteria to serve as an alternate proctor?
An acceptable proctor is someone who can communicate in English and has no conflict of interest in
upholding UMUC's Code of Student Conduct.
Relatives, friends, spouses, and neighbors are not acceptable proctors. Your proctor candidate may be
from one of the following categories:
- An education/testing center official.
- Military commissioned officer of higher rank than the student.
- Faculty or official staff member at a university, community college, or high school.
- Librarian, whose job responsibilities include proctoring exams.
- Corporate training center official.
-
What are the proctor's responsibilities?
- The proctor must ensure that all necessary technologies are available and working. (See question #11 for technology requirements)
- Only the proctor may handle the actual exam prior to and following its completion.
- No person other than the proctor and student may view the exam. (The student may have access to the exam only during the testing period.)
- The proctor must follow the instructor's and UMUC's requirements for administering the exam. These include a time limit, specific allowable equipment, such as a calculator and inclusion or exclusion of books, notes, etc.
- The proctor must prepare the exam (and any relevant materials, e.g., scratch paper) for return by sealing it in an appropriate envelope, provided by the student, immediately after the student completes it.
- The proctor must delete exam(s) from their computer immediately following student completion of the exam(s).
-
What is the fee for alternate proctor services?
Fees vary for the use of a testing facility and the proctor's time to receive, monitor, and return your exam. Please be sure
to determine if there is a fee, what it is, and when it must be paid. These practices vary among libraries, schools, colleges,
universities, and private testing centers. Payment for proctor services is the responsibility of the student, not UMUC.
-

-
What happens after I submit the Alternate Proctor Application Form?
- Two weeks prior to the Proctored Exam Week we begin coordinating with alternate proctors. This allows us sufficient time to complete our coordination and e-mail the exam(s) in time for you to test during the testing period, and is not so early that it jeopardizes the integrity of the exam.
- We will e-mail the proctor requesting that they acknowledge and accept responsibility to serve as your proctor, including the required proctor instructions. Student and instructor are copied in this e-mail.
- Upon receipt of the proctor's acceptance of the responsibilities, we will e-mail the exam(s) to the proctor.
- We will e-mail the student and instructor(s) advising that the exam(s) were sent to the proctor.
-
What technology must an alternate proctor have to administer the exam?
- A working e-mail address. Exams will only be sent via
e-mail.
- A computer for accepting and downloading exam(s).
- A printer.
- E-mail client software.
-
How do I schedule the appointment to take my exam(s)?
- Contact your proctor as soon as possible after receiving our e-mail informing you that your exam(s) have been sent to your proctor.
- Schedule a day and a time within the published testing period, or within the time limit granted by your instructor if you have been given permission to test early or late.
-
What does the alternate proctor do with my completed exam(s)?
- Proctors must mail the completed exam (in a 10" X 12" envelope provided by you the student) to the instructor via First Class Mail. If the instructor's address (found on the exam cover sheet) is an APO/FPO address and the proctor has access to the Military Postal System, the exam(s) may be mailed via MPS.
- You, not the proctor or UMUC, are required to pay for all postage costs.
Note: Failure on the part of the student to assume these responsibilities will be a matter to resolve with the instructor and
could result in a failing grade on the exam in question.
Academic integrity applies to all UMUC students at all times! Select link for UMUC Code of Student Conduct and UMUC Policy for
Violations.
